Matsena KABEL

Freesheet

Two performers are moving forcefully in opposite directions. Red material covers their heads and stretches between them.

Cain and Abel is a sibling rivalry that has rippled through time. In KABEL, brothers Anthony Matsena and Kel Matsena reimagine the story of history’s first murder.

About Matsena

We create multi-disciplinary work focused on physical storytelling. We work with contemporary, hip-hop, ballet, krump, and African dance, as well as theatre, voice, and poetry. We’re interested in creating for different formats, platforms and contexts to help us reach different audiences. We want to make work for audiences whose backgrounds and experiences chime with our own, or who may not engage with the arts as they have traditionally been presented.

We share stories that are about how we observe, understand and try to navigate the contemporary world. They’re rooted in our experience as artists, as immigrants, as people from a working-class community, as young Black men.

We seek out collaborators to inspire and surprise us. They bring new and different creative skills, ideas and approaches. and add depth, clarity and excitement into what we create together. We like to challenge ourselves to try things we haven’t done before. We want to shine a light on the challenges and inequities of modern life, but also celebrate where we find hope and joy in today’s world.
